Quit smoking

Smoking a turn off on Valentines Day

Smoking a turn off on Valentines Day And most days...

If you're looking for romance this Valentine's Day, you could boost your chances of a hot date by quitting smoking, research suggests.

Three out of four people aged 18 to 24 said they would not kiss someone who had just been smoking, a survey by the Department of Health (DOH) found.

Some 64 per cent of people aged 35 to 44 also said they would refuse a kiss from a smoker, the poll of 1,700 people found.

Nearly half of those surveyed said they would think twice about starting a serious relationship with a smoker.

Anyone wanting to stay one step ahead of the game this Valentine’s Day should put an end to their habit and quit today, the Department of Health said.

More than eight million people in England alone are smokers, half of whom are likely to die from smoking related health problems if they don't kick the habit.

Data from online dating agencies also show that someone's smoking habits can have a significant impact on the search for love.

On eHarmony.co.uk, 81 per cent of its members said they would not partner with a heavy smoker.

Similarly, 72 per cent per cent of male members and 73 per cent of female members at Match.com said they were looking for non-smokers as partners, while more than 77 per cent of respondents at mysinglefriend.com said smoking would put them off dating someone.

Sarah Beeny, host of Channel 4’s Property Ladder and founder of mysinglefriend.com, said: "Smoking is clearly a key factor in determining a list of possible matches on a dating website.

"Whilst obviously people aren't permanently a smoker in many cases and some people can see past this - it does clearly influence a person’s decision to date you.

"It’s particularly obvious that non-smokers find it harder to live with a smoker, so by giving up you not only increase your dating market, but will protect the years you have together when you do settle down – get quitting!"
