Sian Welby talks to Dr Chris Steele about the looming obesity crisis in the UK.

The British are the fatest people in Europe, 50% of us are overweight and 50% of those are obese - that's a quarter of the population.

Dr Chris explains that the most basic measure of your weight status is the Body Mass Index or BMI for short.

Your BMI is calculated as your height in kilograms divided by your height in meteres squared.

If that sounds complicated, don't worry because there is a handy BMI calculator on thefamilygp.com at TheFamilyGP.com BMI calculator.

Although used all over the world, the BMI is not perfect. It is especially poor when used by athletes for instance - Linford Christie would be classified as obese for instance!

Dr Chris also explains how your waist size impacts on your health.
