Plan holiday to feel better
Defeat the year's most miserable day
On what is billed 'the most depressing day of the year', a survey has found that your spirits might be lifted by planning a holiday - rather than by dieting or engaging in grueling exercise.
The survey, of 2,770 people, found that just thinking about a holiday was enough to lift the doom and gloom for two-thirds of those polled.
It was conducted by 8 Weeks To Go, a campaign whose goal is to educate travellers about the importance of getting expert health advice before overseas travel.
Campaign psychologist Honey Langcaster-James said: "It is well known that holidays are good for your health. Sometimes being spontaneous is great, but the psychological benefits of the planning process itself should not be underestimated.
"Starting to focus on the good times ahead can genuinely lift people’s spirits during one of the most depressing months of the year."
Campaign ambassador and travel expert Craig Doyle said: "Last minute trips are exciting but they don’t provide the same level of escapism that planned trips do. Planning a holiday early also allows travellers to research their destination of choice, get excited about their holiday and get any advice that they need before heading off."
As many Britons choose to holiday in sunnier climes, the campaign, which was developed and funded by GlaxoSmithKline Travel Health, urges travellers to visit their GP surgery, travel health clinic or pharmacy for the most recent travel health advice up to 8 weeks before their departure.
