Newcastle researchers succeed in breeding mice with this technique - but there are problems.

Experiments in mice use stem cells to create artificial sperm

In Newcastle researchers have used stem cells to grow artifical sperm and used them to fertilise mouse eggs which subsequently developed into mice.

However it is early days yet as the mice born by this technique were all infertile, suffered from breathing or walking difficulties or other abnormalities.

The research took place at Newcastle-Durham NHS Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine.

Obviously the ultimate goal is to treat human male infertility but there are still many barriers to overcome before a treatment is available.
