UK Sat Fat Map shows everyone in Britain eating too much saturated fat.

A new map, based on research by food manufacturer Unilever, shows how much saturated fat Britons eat in their food. They divided the UK up into seven regions, and found stark regional difference in the amounts of saturated fat consumed in foods.

The Scots were found to eat the most saturated fat in their diet, consuming a whopping 55g/day.(The recommended guideline daily amount is 30g for a man and 20g for a woman). This means that women there are consuming 175% more than they should. Lancashire came next with 44g/ day followed by Wales and the South East, Midlands and Anglia with 31/32g per day. Only Anglia and London/South East managed to consume less than 30g of saturated fat per day, not exactly a figure to be proud of.

The survey concluded that, as a country, the UK is eating too much saturated fat in our food. Too much saturated fats can contribute to raised cholesterol, heart disease and stroke. They are found in foods like butter, cheese, sausages, bacon, pies, biscuits, cakes and pastries.

Dr Chris says: This survey confirms what we have known for a long time. You may as well call this a heart health map. The parts of the country which like to eat fatty foods generally have higher levels of heart disease.
