Dr Chris Steele asks some important questions about UK singer Robbie William's prescription drug dependency.

Robbie Williams enters rehab for prescription drugs addiction. But who is supplying him?

Today (13th February 2007) it was announced that chart-topping UK singer Robbie Williams has checked into a US rehab clinic for treatment for his addiction to prescription drugs.

I hope Robbie is successful in his fight, which I understand is part of a longer term struggle with addiction to drugs and alcohol.

But I do have one question - where is he getting these drugs from?

Has been been getting them from a doctor - in which case is this doctor committing an act of gross professional misconduct in supplying him with these drugs when he is abusing them like this?

Alternatively, perhaps he has obtained them from the Internet. Well, it was also reported in the press today that a GP was hauled in front of the General Medical Council for allegged over-zealous prescription of drugs OVER THE INTERNET. Witnesses described how easy it was to obtain powerful drugs via the service without ever meeting the GP.

You should never embark on a course of treatment without meeting and consulting with your doctor. If this is how Robbie obtained these drugs then we need to look seriously at how we handle powerful medicines like this.
