Dr.Chris draws attention to a new device which may aid age related loss of hearing

New device to aid hearing loss

A new device designed to help people with mild/moderate hearing problems is now available on the high street. The Hearplus personal hearing assistant is about the size of a jelly bean sweet. Traditional hearing aids are designed to magnify all types of everyday sounds, and be worn permanently. However, the Hearplus boosts only high frequency sounds such as speech, and can be used on a temporary basis. This means that it is ideal for people whose hearing may have deteriorated due to age and have difficulty in picking up conversation in a crowded room, or with a lot of background noise. The device costs around £149.00, is battery operated and now available from Boots.

Dr.Chris says: Approximately four million people in this country suffer from some sort of hearing loss, but don’t feel that it warrants a hearing aid. This little device can be popped into the ear for watching television with the family, in a restaurant etc. I wish I had taken one with me to the TV Awards last week! I think they could be a real help for people with some hearing loss. However, if your hearing is affected do always get it checked out by your GP first to make sure it’s nothing more serious. If you are considering one of these devices, the seller will also offer you a hearing consultation.
