Dr Chris Steele discusses LiverCheck, a new home testing kit to check the health of your liver - ideal if you are concered about binge drinking.

LiverCheck lets you test the health of your liver from home.

LiverCheck is a home finger prick blood test that allows you to check the health of your liver.

Dr Chris says "consumption of alcohol has risen dramatically in the UK over the last 10 years. We've all heard about binge drinking by young people, but doctors are now concerned about so-called "middle class" drinking."

"Excessive drinking can damage your liver, as well as creating other health problems. This test can help people see the effects their drinking can have on their body."

Liver check tests specifically for damage to your liver cells by testing for two enzymes: ALT and AST. Normally these enzymes are present inside liver cells. However, damage to the liver can cause ALT and AST to leak into the blood. Therefore, high levels of these enzymes in the blood can be an important indicator of liver damage.

How does the liver test work?
The liver test is carried out from the comfort of your home and there is no need to go to a clinic or visit a specialist. When you place an order, a test kit is sent to you in the post, which contains everything you need to take a small blood sample. Once the sample is collected, it should be returned to us the same day to be analysed at our laboratories, in the prepaid envelope provided
