Foods which keep you awake
Avoid these if you want a good night's sleep
Some foods and drink can stop us from sleeping, especially if they are consumed just before going to bed. They should be avoided by everyone, not just by those with a sleep problem.
- Avoid spicy and rich foods and heavy meals before going to bed
- Avoid drinks containing stimulants. These include caffeine drinks such as coffee, tea, Coke and cocoa.
- Avoid all alcoholic drinks. Alcohol may help you fall asleep, but it also helps you wake up later in the night. Alcohol is also a diuretic, and may cause you to go to the loo during the night.
However, some foods are thought to help people sleep, such as warm milky drinks.
Some people find herbal teas like camomile soothing. A simple hot drink which is easy to make is hot water with some lemon and honey.
If you're hungry, a light carbohydrate snack or a bowl of cereal works best.
