Dr Chris Steele provides background information on cancer of the penis.

Everyman's worst nightmare - cancer of the penis.

Cancer of the Penis
This is a relatively rare form of cancer. There are fewer than 1 in 100,000 sufferers in the UK.

Most of them are over the age of 60.

There are nearly 400 new cases each year in the UK.

This form of cancer develops in or on the penis, normally at the end or on the foreskin.

If not treated, cancer cells could spread to other parts of the body.

Thankfully, if caught in its early stages treatment is usually successful.

Dr Chris says "if you notice any changes or unusual lumps or spots on your penis then you should get it checked out right away by your doctor. Early detection is the best defence against diseases such as cancer. Men at the best of times are usually too slow in talking about their health issues, and this may seem particularly embarrassing. However be assured that your doctor will put you at your ease when talking about these issues. A moment of potential awkwardness is a small price to pay for protecting your long term health. Of course, this is a very rare form of cancer, but still you should err on the side of caution."
