As much as one third of cancers could be prevented if people made some basic changes to their lifestyle.

Doctor's Orders - what you can do to help reduce your risk of cancer.

Experts have reported that one third of all cancers could be prevented, as they're due to bulging waistlines, binge drinking, lack of exercise and poor diet! Meaning that 95,000 patients (more than a full Wembley stadium) could avoid getting cancer each year, mainly by changes in lifestyle. Just being overweight increases the risk of certain cancers eg breast, prostate, bowel, uterus and kidney, as well as increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes.

So follow these Dr's Orders to reduce your cancer risk:
  • Fruit, veg and salad: at least 5 portions/day, especially deep coloured.
  • Exercise: 30 mins/day. Brisk walking will do. Girls and young women (12-22yrs) who exercise regularly reduce their risk of breast cancer before the menopause by 25%.
  • Lose weight: aim to remain at your ideal weight.
  • Red meat: maximum of 3 servings per week. Avoid processed meats.
  • Alcohol: Women 2 units/day, men 3 units/day.
  • Stop smoking: nuff said!

Finally have regular smears and mammograms, and report any changes occuring in your body, that last longer than 2 weeks, eg changes in skin, bowel habits etc.
