The causes of male libido loss

what causes lack of libido Lifestyle is often to blame

A loss of libido in men is often a temporary occurrence caused by lifestyle, and physical and emotional factors, rather than a reduction in testosterone.

Physical causes

Physical causes which can affect your libido include:

  • High levels of alcohol intake
  • Other drug use (e.g. cocaine)
  • Obesity
  • General lack of exercise or fitness
  • Health conditions such as diabetes
  • Low testosterone levels
  • Anaemia
  • Prescription drugs

Testosterone is the most important male hormone involved in maintaining your sex drive. In men, testosterone levels usually start to decline after the age of 40. However, this is a gradual decline and a man's lifestyle is usually a more common cause of a reduced sex drive.

Some prescription drugs, especially anti-depressants and some used for prostate conditions can also affect sex drive.

Emotional causes

These can be varied and difficult to diagnose, however the following have been known to cause a reduction in male libido:

  • Stress
  • Overwork
  • Depression
  • Relationship problems

Stress related to work, family and relationships is more than enough to cause a lack of interest in sex.

A loss of libido is common in people suffering from depression, which is another reason why you need to visit your GP if you have lost interest in sex.
