Baby weighing more than one stone born in Texas

Baby weighing one stone born in Texas Twice the average newborn weight

A woman in Texas has given birth to a baby boy weighing 16lb, around twice the average weight of newborn babies in the UK.

The average weight for newborn baby boys is the UK is around 7lb 8oz for boys, and 7lb 4oz for girls, according to the Office of National Statistics.

Janet Johnson delivered JaMichael by cesarean section at the Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, Texas, last Friday.

He weighed 16 pounds and one ounce (7.3kg), four pounds more than the doctors had predicted.

JaMichael is the largest baby born at the Good Shepherd Medical Center and hospital officials believe he may well be the largest baby ever born in the state of Texas.

He was delivered with a full head of hair and the hospital nursery did not have nappies big enough to fit him, Ms Johnson told the Longview News Journal.

Ms Johnson, who also has three daughters aged 18, 16 and 10, said the baby clothes bought for JaMichael are already too small for him.

Ms Johnson developed gestational diabetes during her pregnancy. For this reason, JaMichael is being kept in the Neonatal intensive Care Unit to regulate his blood sugar.

He is otherwise healthy, the News Journal reported.
