'Anti-obesity vaccine' developed
The vaccine prompts the rats' bodies to produce antibodies against the hormone ghrelin, which stimulates hunger and thus weight gain. The study appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences - their web site is here however at the time of writing the study has not yet been published.
The study was lead by Professor Kim Janda, who said that ultimate goal was to develop a vaccine to promote weight loss in humans although it may not be an active vaccine as it is more difficult to control.
However other scientists believe that using this type of vaccine on humans could trigger an immune response against the brain.
In any event the fact remains that the best way to lose weight for the forseeable future is to eat less and exercise more.
