Comment from Dr Chris
Having a big baby, tipping the scales at 11lbs makes any doctor think that Kirstie might have Diabetes. Women with ungiagnosed Diabetes, often have big babies, especially those weighing more than 9 lbs at birth. Kirstie will have to undergo several blood tests to assess whether she does have the condition - Diabetes Mellitus, that has been high-lighted by having such a big baby. There are two two types of diabetes; Type 1 Diabetes, where insulin has to be given by regular daily injections and Type 2 Diabetes where the blood sugar levels can be controlled by diet and lifestyle, alone, or alongwith medication.

Any woman having a baby weighing in at 9lbs or over at birth must be tested for diabetes!
