Embryo screening : British scientists have developed a new DNA test that can stop parents passing on deadly diseases to their children

Embryo screening

British newspapers today (20th June 2006) revealed that British scientists have developed a new DNA test that can stop parents passing on deadly diseases to their children. Embryos produced by IVF for "high-risk" parents are screened for illnesses like cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy. Only healthy embryos are then implanted. Five British women whose babies were at risk have now had normal children after the test, called PGH (preimplantation genetic haplotyping). The technique was developed by Dr Pamela Renwick at London's Guy's Hospital.
